Offered for sale is this handsome Georgian wirework oval sweetmeat wirework basket in Old Sheffield Plate (fused silverplate). The basket has a bail handle, a pink glass liner and collar foot. The pink liner is of the period (the glass has an old whittled surface) but is not a perfect fit for basket. The oval basket is 13 5/8 inches long by 9 inches wide by 10 3/4 inches tall with the handle up. No maker's mark but an engraved insurance mark. Handsome piece. The basket weighs 1 lb 14 oz; the liner weighs 1 lb 4 oz (shipping weight 6 lbs). Circa 1790.
Condition: Very Good condition overall; no rosing or deformation. Good silver surface. The liner has one small rim chip as shown, plus the inclusions and straw marks typical of early glass production.
